The story follows Rachel Chu, a Chinese-American economics professor in New York, who travels with her boyfriend Nick Young to Singapore for his best friend’s wedding. Rachel expects a modest family visit—until she discovers that Nick is the heir to one of the wealthiest families in Asia.
Suddenly thrown into a world of unimaginable wealth, lavish parties, and old-money traditions, Rachel struggles to find her place. She faces disapproval from Nick’s formidable mother, Eleanor Young, who believes Rachel isn’t good enough for her son.
After their whirlwind romance and dramatic engagement in Singapore, Rachel Chu (Constance Wu) and Nick Young (Henry Golding) are preparing for their future together. But love is only the beginning—marriage into Asia’s most powerful family comes with new pressures.
When Rachel discovers long-buried secrets about her birth father and her own hidden connection to immense wealth in China, she is thrust into an even grander and more cutthroat world of the ultra-rich. Suddenly, the question isn’t whether she’s “good enough” for Nick’s family—but whether Nick’s family is prepared for the influence and power Rachel herself may inherit.
Meanwhile, Eleanor Young (Michelle Yeoh) faces her own crisis as rival families challenge the Youngs’ dominance in Singapore’s elite circles. Loyalties are tested, alliances form and break, and love must once again fight against the weight of tradition, power, and status.
